We arrived at Fuqua and almost immediately began to wither as the myriad tasks that define business school life eroded our collective spirit. Relief was perpetually on the horizon, yet never quite seemed to arrive as needed. The beginning of the third term was marked by the onset of the career crush, featuring the internship steeplechase as the main event. Even the supposedly relaxing winter break was clogged with career search activities and closed list anxiety. The dearth of rainfall in the North Carolina piedmont and the unrelenting mental taxation of the Fuqua FY are both equally unsustainable. However, the past few weekends, there has been a noticeable shift in Fuqua social tendencies.

Term 3 is quickly approaching the end and there’s buzz all around Fuqua about upcoming elections. Murmurs of “Who’s running?” or “Who are you voting for?” can be heard throughout the halls. Last week the voice of the students was clear as First Years Vince Rights and Barri Stiber were elected as the incoming leadership of the Class of 2009. With Fuqua’s first big election complete, the coming days present even more opportunity.
Yesterday, I had a chat with Tim Sanders, an advocate for good values in the business world. His first book, “Love is the Killer App”, showed how people who share generously can achieve professional success. It became a New York Times bestseller. His second book, “The Likeability Factor”, explores four aspects of likeability that you can measure and improve- friendliness, relevance, empathy, and realness. Below is an excerpt of the interview.
